Home to a young couple(by heart) and their adult daughter, the house is designed so as to allow elements of heritage, art and architecture to co-exist in with modern details. A judicious use of muted, solid shades largely defines the space with thoughtful touches lending character and individuality, effortlessly reflecting the clients’ personalities, all the while making it functional.
The clients, are passionate about collecting art and accessories. Their discerning eye has led them to build a collection of artworks that resonates with them. While an antique work by M S Hussian marks its presence behind the white couch in the living area, a painting by artist Jamini Roa, positioned on the opposite wall alongside the niches, is like a pleasant surprise waiting to be chanced upon, creating a point of visual interest. Other works include those by artists Sanatan Dinda, ceramic works by a Turkish artist, Pichwai from Rajasthan, Sepia old prints from the Mughal times.
Keeping the clients’ affinity for Art in mind, several details through the house were inspired by elements including the stone sculpture, a statement charpai bed from their ancestral home made with a single piece of wood and rattan weave, a brass matka and wooden art décor panels. Growing up in Kolkata and interacting with local karigaars have shaped the client’s design sensibilities, creating a tasteful meld of heritage and luxury within the space.
The House comprises of 3 areas. The open garden attached to the living and dining is central to the clients need for spending time together as a family. Given that they enjoy entertaining as well and having friends over for intimate dinners the party pad is in the basement and their family area is on another level, the need for a calming, understated yet luxurious space was paramount.
